Russian tennis player Kristina Lyutova, aged 16, has won the WTA 250 hard-court tournament in Memphis, USA, reports infohub.kz.
The athlete, ranked 229th in the world, came through qualifying to reach the main draw. She then recorded four victories on her way to the final.
In the decisive match, Lyutova faced Czech Daria Vidmanova, the world No. 114. The match went the full three sets and ended in a comeback win for the Russian, 1:6, 6:1, 6:3. The players spent two hours on court.
This was Lyutova's debut event on the WTA Tour. The title will see her rise to 126th in the world rankings, a new personal best. Since the start of the year, she has climbed 588 places.
Lyutova became the first WTA champion born in 2010. She is also the youngest title winner at this level in seven years. In 2019, American Coco Gauff won the tournament in Linz, Austria, at the age of 15.
