On September 3, users worldwide reported outages affecting several major artificial intelligence services, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok. The problems were nearly simultaneously recorded on the companies' official status pages and by foreign monitoring services, according to infohub.kz.
OpenAI reported an elevated error rate in ChatGPT and Codex. The company began an investigation around 14:58 UTC, then applied mitigation measures and moved to monitoring the recovery of services.
The outages also affected Claude. Anthropic confirmed an elevated number of errors when accessing several models, including Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6. The company identified the source of the problem and said it was working on a fix.
At xAI, issues were observed with Grok. On the official status page, the company reported problems with the models.
According to The Verge, the outages of ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok began within a short interval and affected users in different countries. ChatGPT users experienced errors in chats, account login, file uploads, voice features, search, Deep Research, and image generation. Grok users, in particular, received messages about model overload.
Complaints came from users of web versions as well as mobile and desktop apps. The mass nature of the problems was also indicated by a rise in reports on Downdetector.
However, data on Google Gemini is conflicting. Some users and media reported issues with the service, but 9to5Google noted that Google had not officially confirmed a Gemini outage at that time. Therefore, it is not yet possible to speak of a complete simultaneous unavailability of all four major AI services.
Whether the incidents are related is still unknown. The Verge notes that there is no confirmation of a single cause for the simultaneous outages at this time.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that on July 25, users worldwide faced a large-scale outage of ChatGPT and other OpenAI services. The company confirmed technical problems and said it was working to resolve them, but the causes of the outage were not disclosed at that time.
