Prosecutors in Kazakhstan's Akmola Region have uncovered the embezzlement of budget funds intended for road repairs, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the agency's official website, the Bulandy District prosecutor's office has launched a pre-trial investigation into a former head of the district's housing and communal services department and executives of a contractor organization on suspicion of embezzling budget funds on an especially large scale.
"It was established that in 2023 the housing and communal services department and the contractor signed an agreement for the medium repair of intra-village roads in the village of Nikolskoye, spanning 5.4 km, for a total of 167.8 million tenge. The contract expired in December 2024, and 103 million tenge in budget funds had been disbursed. An audit established that the actual volume of unfinished work amounts to 78 million tenge, which was spent on purposes unrelated to road repairs," the Akmola Region prosecutor's office said.
The criminal case has been referred to special prosecutors.
