A 9-year-old resident of Aktau is receiving treatment in Astana after complications from a dental procedure, according to his mother. The family is demanding an investigation, reports infohub.kz.
According to the report, the boy was brought in for a preventive checkup in February 2026. The child had no complaints of pain. The mother, Akmaral Kalzhanova, said the treating doctor recommended treatment under anesthesia without a prior X-ray examination. She was not allowed into the operating room, citing the clinic's internal policies.
After the procedure, the tooth was not filled, and a follow-up appointment was scheduled two weeks later. It later emerged that the medical records already indicated the treatment was complete. When the family arrived for the follow-up, a different doctor found no information about the previous visit in the electronic database.
The mother claims that the child was subsequently treated with arsenic paste multiple times, which led to severe pain and facial swelling, and eventually a purulent inflammatory process. In Astana, the boy was diagnosed with osteomyelitis and sequestrum of the lower jaw. During two surgeries, doctors removed about 15 grams of destroyed bone tissue.
The child continues treatment in the capital. According to the mother, about 60–70% of the jawbone has been destroyed, and he faces another surgery. "We are still in Astana undergoing treatment and physiotherapy. The worst part is that those responsible have not even inquired about my son's condition. I don't want this to go unpunished," the woman said.
The Mangistau region health department said that after the family's complaint, they conducted an internal audit of the quality of care and a review of documentation. Following an internal investigation and a protocol meeting, dentists E. Kasiraeva and M. Murzagulova received disciplinary reprimands for the violations. The family disagreed with the outcome and filed a complaint with the Mangistau regional police department, demanding that their statement be registered and a pre-trial investigation be opened.
