A man in Aktobe has been caught running an unusual scam targeting drivers: he staged road accidents and posed as an injured pedestrian to extort money, according to infohub.kz.
According to the Aktobe Region Police Department, the incidents took place at the intersection of Zhienbaev and Tashkentskaya streets. The man created the appearance that he had been struck by a car.
"He then approached drivers and demanded money, claiming he had suffered bodily injuries as a result of being hit. As it turned out, the man had pulled off this scheme twice. In one case, a driver who believed his story transferred 250,000 tenge to him via a mobile app; in another, 200,000 tenge. The total damage amounted to 450,000 tenge," the Aktobe Region Police Department said.
One of the drivers thought the situation over afterward and decided to contact the police. During the investigation, the information was confirmed. The man has been identified as a suspect.
The necessary investigative measures are being carried out to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
