A chief specialist at the transport control inspectorate in the Aktobe Region has stood trial on charges of taking bribes, the website infohub.kz reports.

According to case materials, an entrepreneur bought wheat in Russia and hauled it to the Aktobe Region on heavy trucks. To cut shipping costs, the trucks were loaded beyond the established limit. Once inside Kazakhstan, the chief specialist at the transport control inspectorate took a 10,000-tenge bribe from each vehicle. In return, the cargo was not checked for compliance with the regulations, the trucks passed the post without hindrance, and the businessman did not have to pay overweight fines.

At a certain point, however, the specialist raised the bribe from 10,000 to 15,000 tenge. The entrepreneur then filed a complaint with the National Security Committee (KNB), and the transport control inspectorate employee was detained.

He later stood trial on charges of taking bribes totaling 170,000 tenge. The defendant fully admitted his guilt, which allowed him to remain at liberty. The court sentenced him to a fine of 5 million 950 thousand tenge, or 35 times the amount of the bribe.
