A former driver for Alan Jones has told a Sydney court he was required to make the 2GB host's breakfast of soft-boiled eggs with bread soldiers, clean his bathroom, and iron his underpants. Complainant C described the offer to become Jones's driver as a "dream job".
Complainant C told the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday that Jones paid him $40,000 a year to be his driver. Although officially a driver at 2GB, he effectively worked as a producer. He was also tasked with household chores at Jones's Macquarie Street apartment.
"Alan had a kitchen in his office and I had to make soft-boiled eggs and Burgen bread, and cut it into soldiers," C said. "I took it in on a tray and had a cloth napkin on my arm." He said he had to loiter around the studio waiting for an opportunity to go in because if he left the empty tray too long, he was berated by the broadcaster.
Jones has pleaded not guilty to 20 indecent assault charges and two counts of sexual touching against six men. Complainant C is the second alleged victim to give evidence at the trial. He said he grew up listening to talkback radio and always wanted to work in radio.
After the show ended each day, C drove Jones home and sometimes performed household tasks under the direction of Jones's butler. He was given small items to iron, including handkerchiefs and underpants. C started working at 2GB when he was 18, and was helped by fellow broadcaster Ray Hadley, who paid him for the first three months out of his own pocket.
C said he didn't sign a contract because Jones told him contracts tended to "intimidate young people". He also recalled delivering flowers for Jones, including to an athlete before they won an Olympic gold medal. The trial before Judge Glenn Walsh continues.
