In the quarterfinals, the Spaniard faced American Ben Shelton, ranked ninth in the ATP. The match went the full five sets, with four of them decided by tiebreaks. Shelton won 6:7 (5:7), 6:1, 6:3, 1:6, 7:6 (10:7).
The players spent 4 hours and 28 minutes on court, with the match ending at 3:33 a.m. local time — the latest finish in US Open history.
Shelton reached the semifinals of his home Grand Slam for the second time in his career. He will face fellow American Frances Tiafoe for a spot in the final.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, failed to defend his title. He had won the US Open last season and also in 2022. This tournament was his first in nearly five months, as he had been recovering from an injury that forced him to miss two majors — the French Open and Wimbledon.
