Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, who plays for the American club Washington Capitals, has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League (NHL). The news was reported by infohub.kz.
A statement from Alexander Ovechkin was posted on the Washington Capitals' Instagram account, in which he said that the current season would be his last in the NHL. The renowned hockey player reached this decision together with his family.
"I love this game so much, but deep down I know this is the right decision. It was important to me to make this announcement before our first home game, so that I have the chance to thank everyone who was at the game, everyone who has meant so much to me and my family and helped me through the good times and the tough losses. Without them, I could not have achieved everything I have in life. My teammates and I are thrilled about this season, and we will do everything we can to make it special. I am going to enjoy every moment spent with my family, my boys, our fans and everyone who has been part of my hockey career," Ovechkin said.
Recall that in 2025, Ovechkin broke legendary Gretzky's record for the most goals in NHL regular seasons, which had long been considered "eternal." And this year he was recognized as the best goal scorer in the history of hockey.
