Kazakhstan's top-ranked player, Alexander Bublik, made his Laver Cup debut and suffered two defeats in a single evening, according to infohub.kz.
First, the Kazakh tennis player, representing Team World, fell to Spain's Rafael Jódar 2-6, 3-6. Then, partnering with American Taylor Fritz, he lost to the duo of Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) and Jakub Menšík (Czech Republic) 4-6, 4-6.
After the first day of the exhibition match between Europe and the rest of the world, the Old World players lead 3-1.
The Laver Cup, named after the famous Australian tennis player Rod Laver (now 88 years old), is being held for the ninth time. It features six European tennis players and an equal number of athletes representing the rest of the world. Three are selected automatically based on the ATP rankings, and three more are invited by the captains.
Over three days, 12 matches are played (9 singles and 3 doubles). A win in each first-day match earns the team 1 point. Each victory on the second day is worth 2 points. On the third day, a win is worth three points. The team that reaches 13 points first wins.
All matches are played as best of three sets, with the third set in a 10-point tiebreak format.
Team Europe has five victories so far, while Team World has won three times.
