The 76-year-old justice said, "Obviously, I'm here for another term." This statement came after rumors circulated that he might step down. In June, a mistake by a veteran Supreme Court reporter at National Public Radio led to the erroneous publication of a pre-prepared retirement story. The story was quickly retracted, but it sparked discussions about Alito's future.
Had Alito retired, it would have given President Donald Trump the opportunity to appoint a fourth Supreme Court justice. However, in a rare interview in his chambers, Alito emphasized that political partisanship does not influence his decisions. "I vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided," he said. "If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well."
