On August 31, 2026, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, a meeting took place between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The leaders of the two countries discussed the progress of normalizing bilateral relations and the implementation of previously reached peace agreements, according to infohub.kz.
The sides emphasized the historical significance of the Washington Peace Summit of August 8, 2025, the joint declaration signed with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, and the initialing of the text of the "Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations."
During the talks, it was noted that the peace process is already yielding first practical results. In particular, exports of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia have begun, as well as transit of grain and other goods from third countries through Azerbaijani territory.
"The leaders discussed further practical steps related to the implementation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) — one of the key outcomes of the Washington Summit. The sides underscored the importance of projects to develop transport links along this route and welcomed direct contacts between business communities, parliamentarians, and civil society representatives," the statement said.
The President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia positively assessed the work of the state commissions on the delimitation of the state border and confirmed the need to continue their efforts.
Following the meeting, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan agreed to maintain direct bilateral contacts to ultimately consolidate sustainable peace, normalize interstate relations, and develop transport and logistics corridors in the region.
