This coming Sunday, August 16, one of Almaty's main traffic arteries, Al-Farabi Avenue, will be completely closed to vehicle traffic. The closure is due to the international cycling event Gran Fondo World Championship, according to infohub.kz.

Gran Fondo is a series of races that originated in Italy about a hundred years ago and has since spread worldwide. Both professional cyclists and amateurs can participate. In Almaty, about a thousand participants from more than 20 countries are expected, the city akimat's press service reports.

The race start and finish will be located at Al-Farabi Avenue, 40. Athletes will follow a circular route. The minimum distance will be 37 kilometers, the maximum 95 kilometers. These competitions have been held in Kazakhstan since 2023.

Traffic will be restricted in two stages. From 5:30 to 6:40 a.m., the section from Dostyk Avenue to Talgar Tract will be closed. Then, from 5:30 to 10:30 a.m., the segment from Dostyk Avenue to Navoi Street will be closed.

Earlier it was reported that bus passengers and car drivers are arguing about the effectiveness of introducing a dedicated lane on Sain Street.
