Since the start of 2026, Almaty has recorded 224 crimes committed under the influence of alcohol, with 97 cases involving grievous bodily harm, reports infohub.kz.
In response, police have intensified preventive work with owners and sellers of retail outlets that sell alcoholic beverages. Store employees are being reminded of the rules for selling alcohol and the liability for violating the law.
The latest meeting was held with the participation of officers from the Department of Police's Coordination of Preventive Work, together with the Almaly District Police Department.
Zhandos Kavliyev, head of the Coordination of Preventive Work Department of the Almaty Police, stressed that prevention remains one of the key priorities of police work.
“Our task is not only to respond to consequences but also to prevent causes. That is why preventive work with businesses selling alcoholic beverages remains one of the important areas of police activity,” Kavliyev said.
The police urge citizens to drink responsibly and consider the potential consequences.
Earlier it was reported that Kazakhstan ranked first among Central Asian countries in alcohol consumption. According to the World Population Review ranking, based on data from the World Health Organization, each resident over 15 years old consumes 5.4 liters of pure alcohol per year. Over the year, the figure decreased from 6.38 liters, and Kazakhstan dropped from 68th to 83rd place in the world.
