On Thursday, August 15, unfavorable meteorological conditions expected to contribute to air pollution are forecast for Almaty and Atyrau, with Oskemen joining overnight, according to infohub.kz.
Kazhydromet explained that unfavorable meteorological conditions (UMC) are a combination of short-term weather factors, such as calm winds, light wind, fog, and temperature inversion, which lead to the accumulation of harmful substances in the surface layer of the atmosphere. When UMC occur, air quality in populated areas may deteriorate. The level of pollution largely depends on the forecast of the synoptic situation, including wind, precipitation, humidity, and temperature.
In light of the adverse conditions, specialists recommend reducing time spent outdoors, especially near highways and other sources of pollution. Children and pregnant women should avoid long walks. People with chronic lung diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and allergies should carry their medications while outside. It is also advised to limit physical exertion outdoors and to conduct physical education and sports activities in indoor facilities.
