Reconstruction is continuing at the markets that make up Almaty's sprawling bazaar in the Zhetysu district, with some retail sites already upgraded while decisions on the rest have yet to be made, district mayor Qurasbek Sadibekov told a press conference at the Regional Communications Service, infohub.kz reports.
According to Sadibekov, the Rakhat bazaar, which he said covers an area of about 9 hectares, is currently being rebuilt. A new public square is also under construction on a 0.3-hectare plot nearby.
Deputy district mayor Aidyn Saparbek also briefed reporters on the work at the bazaar. He said 16 markets are located in the Zhetysu district, 13 of them along the Northern Ring Road, and that 11 have already been modernized.
"Modernization of the Novy Yalyan market is under way, and next year we plan to modernize the Barys market and the old Yalyan along the Northern Ring Road. The markets will continue to operate as usual, meaning no decisions have been made on them yet," Saparbek explained.
It was reported earlier that the large Zhetysu-Semirechye market in Almaty was slated for demolition. The owner began dismantling it after a court ruling.
