In Almaty, the city administration responded to criticism of the new bike lane on Zhandosov Street, where a pole ended up directly in the path of cyclists. Authorities explained why such a decision was made and how they plan to ensure safety, reports infohub.kz.
The Almaty Public Spaces Development Department published a separate video addressing the issue. Since moving the traffic light was impossible, the section of the lane was simply painted over, removing the markings.
Department representatives explained that this option was already considered during the design phase of the improvement project. Moving the traffic light would have required a comprehensive reconstruction of the intersection and utility networks, so the idea was abandoned.
The department also assured that the detour will maintain the continuity of the cycling route and ensure the safety of all road users. "The decision was made taking into account numerous appeals from residents and is aimed at improving convenience and safety of movement," the department's statement said.
However, it remains unclear why the designers did not consider the option of slightly widening the bike lane at the expense of the sidewalk. In comments, residents thanked the authorities for creating the lane but asked for additional safety measures on this section.
Recall that comprehensive improvement of Zhandosov Street began in 2026. The project includes the creation of bike lanes, renovation of sidewalks and lighting, landscaping, and the arrangement of public spaces. Work is planned to be completed by the end of the year.
