Major repairs and expansion have begun on one of the busiest sections of the Almaty-Bishkek international highway. The stretch from the 19th to the 27th kilometer in the Karasai district of the Almaty region, which sees over 70,000 vehicles daily, is undergoing reconstruction, reports infohub.kz citing KazAvtoZhol.
The current four-lane road can no longer handle the heavy traffic, leading to frequent congestion and increased accident risk.
After reconstruction, the number of lanes will double from four to eight, and the section will meet standards for a continuous-flow main road.
The project also includes construction of two 'horseshoe' type interchanges, nine elevated pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, outdoor lighting, and new durable pavement. Additionally, utilities such as gas pipelines, water supply networks, power lines, and fiber-optic cables will need to be relocated.
Once completed, the capacity of one of Almaty's key entry points is expected to increase significantly, reducing travel time between the city and its suburbs.
