Almaty blogger Sanat Auelтай continues to test the quality of gasoline at city gas stations. This time, he decided to mix different grades of fuel taken from the same station and measure the octane number of the resulting blend, according to infohub.kz.
First, he checked AI-92 and AI-98 for compliance with their declared class, and then mixed them. The octane meter showed 98. When mixing AI-92 with AI-95, the device gave a result of 94.
According to the blogger, he took gasoline samples at the RP (Royal Petrol) gas station located along Al-Farabi Avenue.
What happens when different gasolines are mixed
During a normal refueling, new fuel mixes with the remnants of the previous one. If you fill AI-95 on top of AI-92, the final octane number will depend on the proportions and characteristics of both types of gasoline. Therefore, the result of the experiment with an octane meter will not necessarily repeat what happens in a car's tank.
Moreover, the readings depend on the accuracy of the device. Ultimately, such tests should not be taken as proof of compliance or non-compliance of fuel with the declared class.
Mixing gasolines of different octane numbers is usually not dangerous in itself, if both types of fuel are suitable for the engine. The main thing is that the final mixture meets the minimum octane number recommended by the manufacturer. If it turns out to be lower, detonation may occur under high load.
