The reconstruction of Almaty's Central Stadium, which would have increased seating capacity, has been suspended, Bostandyk district mayor Azamat Kaldybekov said at a briefing at the regional communications service, according to infohub.kz.
Journalists asked the district mayor whether a major overhaul of the Central Stadium was planned, given that world stars have been visiting the city more often.
"A project to reconstruct the Central Stadium with an increase in seating capacity was previously under consideration. However, it has now been suspended because of the construction of a new stadium," Kaldybekov said.
According to him, routine repairs are carried out at the venue every year: the grounds are tidied up, asphalt is laid and facade work is carried out.
"The issue of a comprehensive major overhaul of the Central Stadium is on the agenda and is being considered," Kaldybekov said. He added that the exact timing of the overhaul is not yet known.
Recall that in August 2025 it was announced that a modern, international-standard stadium was to be built in Almaty. In December of that year, it was reported that the stadium would seat 35,000. A model of the sports facility was also published.
However, the Almaty akimat recently said that the stadium, being built to UEFA standards, would seat not 35,000 but 45,000, and that it would look different as well.
