The Almaty City Court has reviewed an appeal in the case of a fatal accident that occurred in March this year on Al-Farabi Avenue, reports infohub.kz.
The appeal was considered on August 5, 2026, with the ruling issued the same day. The appeal was filed by the victim—the father of one of the women who died in the crash. According to case materials available in the court's online cabinet, the appeal concerned only the civil claim: the father sought 100 million tenge in moral damages from the convicted driver.
The ruling notes that the lower court's findings on the defendant's guilt, the legal classification of his actions, and the criminal sentence were not contested by the victim's side. However, the defendant's lawyer filed an objection to the appeal.
The court decided to uphold the verdict of the Specialized Interdistrict Court for Criminal Cases (SMUS) of Almaty and rejected the appeal of the victim and his lawyer.
On the night of March 21, a terrible accident occurred on Al-Farabi Avenue in Almaty. Police reported that a Zeekr car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Mercedes. As a result, the Mercedes driver and two passengers died at the scene.
In court, the relatives of the deceased man stated they had reconciled with the defendant and asked that he not be imprisoned or be given a suspended sentence. Then the mother of a deceased female passenger also spoke, asking for a suspended sentence for the Zeekr driver.
Later, it became known that a third victim, the mother of another deceased female passenger, also dropped her claims against the defendant, requesting a non-custodial sentence. Subsequently, another victim appeared in the case—the father of a deceased female passenger of the Mercedes.
Earlier, the defendant himself testified, recounting what happened that night and stating he did not intend to evade punishment.
On June 22, the judge sentenced the defendant, finding him guilty and sentencing him to 10 years in prison in a minimum-security facility, with a lifetime ban on driving.
