A 54-year-old man has died in a road accident in Almaty while riding an electric scooter. According to preliminary information, he was travelling along the Eastern Bypass Road at a speed of about 90 km/h, the website infohub.kz reports.
The crash occurred at night. Footage from surveillance cameras and dashcams shows the scooter rider travelling along the left edge of the roadway when he decided to overtake a vehicle ahead of him. He lost control during the manoeuvre and fell onto the asphalt. The impact knocked his protective helmet off.
Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene, but the man died of his injuries. A pre-trial investigation has been launched and all the circumstances of the incident are being established.
Police said that since the start of the year, 91 accidents involving electric scooters have been registered in Almaty, injuring 96 people.
In late August, Kursiv reported on the death of a 44-year-old Almaty resident who fell from an electric scooter on Varlamov Street. In addition, according to the Interior Ministry, 139 accidents involving electric scooters were registered in Kazakhstan in the first eight months of 2026, killing two people.
Police recalled that an electric scooter is a road user and its use requires compliance with the rules.
Earlier, Kursiv Auto reported that major changes to traffic rules for scooters took effect on 25 August.
