Almaty will intensify street watering and maintenance of the road network due to a forecast temperature increase, reports infohub.kz.

The city's press service announced this on Wednesday, July 16, citing the Department of Municipal Infrastructure and Housing Inspection.

Starting Thursday, 16 columns of special equipment will operate on main streets and areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. They will water the roadways with water sprayed into the air (aeration). The work will be carried out during the hottest hours and will cover more than 128 city streets.

"At the same time, daily sanitary maintenance of the road network continues. Over 500 units of specialized equipment are already involved in washing roads, sidewalks, bus stops, and other city infrastructure facilities," the press service said.

The aeration and watering are expected to lower air temperature near the road surface, enhance dust suppression, reduce asphalt heating, and thereby decrease thermal stress on the pavement during the extreme heat.

According to Kazhydromet, abnormally hot weather is expected in Almaty from July 16 to 20. Air temperatures will locally reach +42°C, exceeding +40°C for the first time this season and significantly above the climatic norm.
