In Almaty, a young man suffered a severe eye injury while working with stone: a shard pierced several membranes at high speed and penetrated deep inside. Ophthalmologists performed a complex multi-stage operation and removed the foreign body, infohub.kz reports.

According to NUR.KZ, the young man was breaking a stone with a sledgehammer when one of the shards struck his eye. The foreign body damaged the cornea, lens, iris and deep structures of the eye.

"The ophthalmologists faced complex and delicate work: the injury was extremely severe — the cornea, lens, iris and deep structures of the eye were damaged," the statement said.

Doctors restored the damaged structures step by step, striving to save the eye and preserve as much vision as possible.

"The injury was extremely severe: the stone shard penetrated deep into the eye. We performed a complex multi-stage operation: we sutured the cornea, removed the traumatic cataract, fixated the lens, performed iris plasty and vitrectomy. During the operation we found and removed the shard, after which we injected silicone oil to preserve the structure of the eye," noted Gulzat Abdraimova, head of the ophthalmology department.

The Almaty Public Health Department noted that this case once again shows how dangerous eye injuries can be when working with stone and other hard materials.

"Protective goggles must be used during such work," the department added.
