A roof collapsed overnight at the Student Palace of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty. The city administration's press service said the incident was a planned roof dismantling carried out as part of the building's reconstruction, not an emergency, according to infohub.kz.
Almaty residents were the first to report the incident, sharing photos on social media saying the roof of the Student Palace had caved in overnight. The press service of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University later said the building was undergoing reconstruction.
It was initially unclear whether the roof had collapsed as a result of planned reconstruction work or whether an emergency had occurred. Almaty's city administration provided further comment to a NUR.KZ correspondent.
"On September 23, 2026, planned work to dismantle the roof of the U.A. Dzholdasbekov Student Palace was carried out at night. To ensure safety and avoid disrupting the educational process, all work was conducted at night. Safety measures were fully observed by the contractors. There are no injuries," the statement said.
