Almaty resident Gulmira Ileuova posted on Facebook about the replacement of the irrigation ditch system on Kunaev Street, reports infohub.kz.
"They are replacing the irrigation ditches on Kunaev Street. Almost new ones with new ones," Ileuova wrote. The post drew many comments from other users. Some suggested that the ditches could be installed in areas that have never had them.
The city's Ecology and Environment Department responded. According to them, an inspection of the irrigation ditch networks on Kunaev Street had been conducted earlier at the request of the Medeu District Akimat's office to identify damaged sections.
"Currently, as part of the project 'Construction and Reconstruction of Irrigation Ditch Networks and Storm Sewage in the Eastern Part of Almaty,' construction and installation work is being carried out in the Medeu District. Due to the unsatisfactory technical condition and partial destruction of the irrigation ditch network, we are performing reconstruction of the B-3 irrigation ditch networks along the eastern and western sides of Kunaev Street from Karasai Batyr Street to Makataev Avenue, with a total length of 2.5 km. The reconstruction is being carried out on sections with destroyed ditch trays and slabs," the department stated.
The department also noted that measures are planned to ensure water drainage into the irrigation ditch networks, since surface runoff currently cannot enter the existing system because of the curb barrier.
