Almaty has started laying the first rails for its future light rail transit (LRT) line, with footage from the construction site appearing on social media, according to infohub.kz.
The post was published on the Instagram account lrt.almaty. The video caption is brief: "The first rails of Almaty's LRT."
The city administration previously said the first phase of the LRT's first line begins at a depot located in the industrial zone of the Alatau district, near the intersection of Monke bi and B. Momyshuly streets. The route then runs along B. Momyshuly Street to Tole bi Street, then east along Tole bi Street to Abylai Khan Avenue, and further along Abylai Khan Avenue to Almaty-2 railway station. The final stop is planned to be the Raiymbek batyr transport hub.
The line is scheduled to launch at the end of 2027. However, the actual completion date may be adjusted depending on the manufacturing and delivery timelines for the required number of rolling stock, the city administration noted.
It was also reported that one LRT train in the southern capital will be able to carry 285 passengers. The average speed will be 35 km/h.
