Green spaces in Almaty's Medeu district will be irrigated with river water instead of drinking water, district akim Yerkebulan Orazalin said, according to infohub.kz.
According to the akim, water consumption in Almaty rises noticeably in summer. That is why officials decided to use river water for green spaces — it will ease the burden on the city's water supply system and avoid drawing on drinking water.
To make this happen, the district needs to build separate infrastructure. It will be required not only to deliver the water but also for the ongoing care of the planted vegetation.
In 2026, the system has already been put into use on sections of 14 streets covering a total area of about 7.1 hectares. Similar work is under way along the Eastern Bypass Road (VОАД), where the system is expected to cover 16 hectares of green space.
Using alternative sources will thus help preserve drinking water for residents' household needs and ensure that green spaces are watered during the summer.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle set out to find how much water and money were spent on irrigation in 2026. City officials did not disclose the amounts, but explained how contractors are selected for watering.
