Almaty plans to reconstruct a section of Medeubekov Street between Abai and Raiymbek avenues, widening the roadway to four lanes and adding sidewalks, bike lanes and street lighting, the website infohub.kz reports.
The project was presented by Olzhas Shabdanov, head of the city's road infrastructure development department, at a meeting of the city maslikhat.
"The reconstruction project for Medeubekov Street between Abai Avenue and Raiymbek Avenue, with a total length of 3.3 km, provides for widening the roadway to four lanes. It also includes sidewalks and bike lanes, street lighting and modern traffic management systems," Shabdanov said.
According to him, the possibility of a dedicated lane for public transport will be considered during transport modeling.
"Widening this street will create a main connection with Abai Avenue and the under-construction extensions of Tole Bi and Zhubanov streets. An extension to Ryskulov Avenue is not currently planned," he added.
Almaty Akim Darhan Satybaldy noted that the section was previously under the region's jurisdiction.
"We asked for the road to be transferred to the city, and we will finance its widening and maintenance ourselves," he said.
He added that a similar situation has arisen with the extensions of Abai and Ryskulov avenues and Tlendiev and Sain streets.
"We take them to the boundary, but no work is done beyond it. We have also taken these sections over and will extend them to the BAKAD and complete them at the expense of the city budget, since they are primarily needed by the city," he concluded.
