Almaty is pressing ahead with the expansion of its metro, road network and public transport: city authorities plan to open the new Kalkaman metro station by the end of 2026 and, in the longer term, to connect Zhibek Zholy station with the airport, infohub.kz reports.
According to Bauyrzhan Kudaibergenov, head of the Almaty department of economy and finance, the Kalkaman station will form part of a new metro branch. Construction of the section from Kalkaman to Barlyk station has already begun this year.
"To further expand the metro network, design and estimate documentation will be drawn up for a second line from Zhibek Zholy station to the airport," Kudaibergenov said at a maslikhat meeting.
Road construction will also continue. The plans include extending Ryskulov Avenue to the city limits. Mukanov Street will also be extended, from Gogol to Raiymbek Avenue. Raiymbek Avenue itself is to be extended to the Eastern Bypass Road (VОАД).
Road construction in the Akzhar and Terekty districts is to be completed by the end of the year. New roads and utility networks will also appear in the "Western Gates" polycentre.
"Additional funds have also been earmarked to subsidise public transport — bus services and the metro," the city akimat said in summary.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that Almatymetrokurylis posted a loss of 866.9 million tenge for 2025. In addition, the company owes contractors more than 500 million tenge under various court cases, while its total debt to them exceeds 2.3 billion tenge.
