Heavy rains in Almaty left drivers struggling to navigate one of the city's avenues after a section of the road caved in, sending several cars into a deep sinkhole. Repair crews are working to fix the damage, according to infohub.kz.
According to the Instagram account kris_p_almata, a traffic jam formed overnight on Momyshuly Avenue in Almaty because of the collapsed road section.
"Due to road repair work, a section of the road collapsed, creating a deep sinkhole. Several cars fell into the hole, and traffic in the area was disrupted," the account said in a caption accompanying posted videos.
An NUR.KZ correspondent asked the Almaty akimat's press service for comment. Officials provided a response from the city's Department of Road Infrastructure Development.
"As part of the LRT project, work was carried out to reroute utility networks along sections of Momyshuly and Tole bi streets. Due to heavy precipitation, the ground subsided in some areas, disrupting traffic. The contractor is currently carrying out restoration work, including compacting the base and using milled asphalt concrete as a temporary measure to ensure safe passage of vehicles," the department said.
The asphalt concrete surface will be restored once weather conditions stabilize, officials noted.
