The Almaty Museum of Arts will present for the first time the 24-hour video installation "The Clock" by American artist Christian Marclay. Residents and guests of Almaty will have a unique opportunity to see this famous contemporary art piece from September 12 to October 12, reports infohub.kz.
The video installation will be shown in the Al-Farabi auditorium. "The Clock" consists of thousands of fragments from feature and documentary films in which clocks appear or time is mentioned. It is one of the iconic works of contemporary art of the 21st century, which has never been exhibited in Central Asia before.
During the exhibition, the museum will be open around the clock on selected dates: September 19, September 26, October 3, and October 10. Visitors can come at any time of day and see a fragment of the work corresponding to the current time. However, other halls will be closed on these days.
The entrance fee on 24-hour viewing days will depend on the time of visit. If you come after 9 p.m., a ticket to see "The Clock" will cost only 500 tenge. Before 9 p.m., the regular adult museum ticket costs 3,000 tenge.
The main feature of the work is its synchronization with real time. For example, if a visitor enters the hall at 12:53, the screen will also show 12:53 at that moment. The video lasts exactly 24 hours and continuously repeats the day.
Christian Marclay was born in 1955 and lives and works in London and New York. He is known as an artist, composer, and musician working with sound, video, and collage. He worked on "The Clock" for several years. The work incorporates over a thousand film fragments united by the theme of time.
It is worth recalling that from July 1 to January 17, 2027, the exhibition "Bill Viola: The Space of Time" is taking place, and from September 8, "Mүсіндер: Sculpture of Kazakhstan from the 1950s to the Present" opens.
