Law enforcement officers in Almaty discovered a large batch of illegal substances during a night inspection — according to preliminary police data, synthetic drugs with a total weight of more than one kilogram, the website infohub.kz reports.

The Police Department said officers from the drug-crime unit detained a 25-year-old man in the city's Nauryzbai district.

During a search of a carsharing vehicle, a bag containing 30 bundles wrapped in tape was found on the passenger seat. Inside was a white powdery substance. According to preliminary data, it is mephedrone, and the total weight of the seized material exceeded one kilogram.

The discoveries did not end there: at the detainee's place of residence, officers found a container holding about a kilogram of a powdery substance, as well as two bundles of a plant-based substance — presumably hashish — with a total weight of about 50 grams.

"According to preliminary data, the detainee worked as a courier for a drug network. He received the coordinates of stashes via a messenger, picked up the illegal substances and was paid for each such order," police said.

A criminal case has been opened over the incident. The seized substance has been sent for examination.
