By October of this year, medical organizations in Almaty had received 130.3 billion tenge for services provided to city residents under the mandatory social health insurance system. That is almost 62% of the annual budget of 211.8 billion tenge, the website infohub.kz reports.

According to data from the Almaty branch of the Social Health Insurance Fund, the largest share of payments went to inpatient care — more than 74.2 billion tenge. Another 5.8 billion tenge was allocated to pay for day-hospital services.

Significant sums were also spent in other areas: consultations and diagnostics — 22.2 billion tenge, rehabilitation — 5.1 billion tenge, and high-tech medical care — a record 16.8 billion tenge.

Ilyas Mukhamedzhan, director of the Almaty branch of the Social Health Insurance Fund, emphasized that thanks to the OSMS system, city residents gain access each year to various types of surgical interventions, including expensive ones. According to him, such operations are performed both in polyclinics and in research centers, depending on their complexity.

"It is worth noting that when we talk about expensive operations, for an uninsured person they can cost several million tenge and do not depend on the amount of contributions and deductions. This is probably the social orientation of the OSMS system," Ilyas Mukhamedzhan noted.

The three most costly interventions were: implantation of an implantable auxiliary cardiac system — 80.2 million tenge (one such operation was performed in 2025, and in the first 8 months of 2026 their number rose to 14); transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells — 17.5 million tenge; and mitral valve clipping — 17.4 million tenge (two procedures in 2025 and already 19 in the first 8 months of 2026).

A total of 19.9 billion tenge was allocated to cardiac surgery, with 7,367 interventions performed. The average cost of one such operation is estimated at almost 3 million tenge.

In addition, 3,167 neurosurgical operations worth 5.6 billion tenge were performed in the city, along with 3,368 hip and knee replacement operations with a total cost of 5.3 billion tenge. The list also includes 3,558 vascular and neurovascular interventions worth 4.6 billion tenge and 54 liver, kidney and heart transplant operations worth 303.5 million tenge.
