An Almaty resident has asked Kazakhstan's interior minister to look into an incident at a district police department where, according to him, his friend's phone was taken, infohub.kz reports.

Almaty police are investigating a complaint against the deputy head of the police department of the Almalinsky district. The author of a post, @alin.ambr on Threads, claims that the officer forcibly took his friend's phone during an appointment.

According to the author, the mobile device contained four video recordings that could back up his account. The author did not specify what exactly was captured in those videos or what issue the man had come to discuss. After the conflict, the visitor was asked to leave the office, and his phone was not returned.

The author also said he had contacted the internal security department and the city police department, but received no response to his complaint. He ultimately decided to appeal publicly to Kazakhstan's interior minister and asked for the situation to be given publicity.

Almaty police said they have launched an investigation into the matter.

"The Almaty city police department is conducting an investigation into this matter. The citizen's request regarding the possible misuse of personal data has been sent to the Almaty city justice department for consideration in accordance with the law. In addition, the fact that personal belongings were left in the office has been registered in the manner prescribed by law. The left items have been handed over to the relevant unit of the Almaty city police department for investigation and a procedural decision," the statement said.
