A police officer accused of dereliction of duty that investigators said could have led to a fatal crash on Al-Farabi Avenue has been sentenced by the Medeu District Court for Criminal Cases in Almaty, according to infohub.kz.
The judge found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 3.5 years in a minimum-security penal institution.
In addition, the convict is permanently barred from holding public service positions and has been stripped of his police sergeant rank. He remains in custody as a preventive measure.
The sentence will be calculated at one day in custody for every two days served in a minimum-security penal institution.
Earlier, a trial began in Almaty for the driver of the former deputy head of the Almaty Police Department. He was accused of dereliction of duty that investigators said could have led to the fatal crash on Al-Farabi Avenue that claimed three lives.
Recall that on the night of March 21, a horrific accident occurred on Al-Farabi Avenue in Almaty. Police said a Zeekr vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Mercedes. As a result, the Mercedes driver and two passengers died at the scene.
On June 22, the judge sentenced the defendant, finding him guilty and imposing 10 years in a minimum-security penal institution, along with a lifetime driving ban.
