The Almaty prosecutor's office has reclaimed through the courts the land and building of the former railway hospital in the city center, with the total value of the assets exceeding 2 billion tenge, reports infohub.kz.
The property and adjacent land had previously belonged to the Railway Hospital for Disaster Medicine. In 2018, a series of transactions transferred the assets into private ownership without competitive bidding. In court, prosecutors from the Almaly district proved that the sale of land and real estate circumvented Kazakhstan's land and property legislation, and the participants in the chain of deals were affiliated with each other.
Earlier, the city prosecutor's office had managed to cancel auctions under enforcement proceedings, preventing the property from being resold to third parties. The court invalidated all transactions involving the alienation of state property. As a result, the state recovered: a building with an area of 1,628 square meters, two land plots with a total area of 0.3 hectares. The total estimated value of the property is over 2 billion tenge. The appellate panel upheld the decision.
The building of the former railway hospital attracted attention from Almaty residents for its architecture featuring columns, arches, stucco, and national patterns. It was built between 1948 and 1950 according to the design of architect Kudryavtsev and was originally called the Turksib Hospital. In 2024, a fire broke out in the building located at the intersection of Abay Avenue and Masanchi Street: trash caught fire on the second floor. The blaze was quickly extinguished, but traces remained.
