Five new schools with a total capacity of 5,100 student places are planned for the Almaty agglomeration. The project is being implemented jointly by the akimats of the Almaty Region and the city of Almaty to eliminate the shortage of places and reduce pendulum migration of students, reports infohub.kz.
This was announced by the akim of the Almaty Region, Marat Sultangaziyev, at the conference "Constitutional Values: Professionalism, Quality, Result." The preliminary cost of the joint project is about 41.8 billion tenge. The regional akimat has already identified land plots and transferred all technical information to the project office of Almaty.
The main goal of the initiative is to give children the opportunity to study near home. Currently, about 16,000 children living in the region are forced to travel daily to schools in the metropolis.
Construction is planned in the following localities: the city of Alatau (Zhana Dauir microdistrict) - a school for 900 places; Ili district (Ekpendi village) - a school for 900 places; Karasai district (Koksai village) - a school for 1,200 places; Karasai district (Kyrgauldy village) - a school for 1,200 places; Talgar district (Tuzdybastau village) - a school for 900 places.
In parallel, by the new 2026-2027 academic year, five new schools "Keleshek mektepteri" with 4,200 places will be commissioned in the region. They will open in the villages of Koyankus (Alatau city), Tilendiyeva (Ili district), Bulakty (Karasai district), as well as in the villages of Satay and Ashchysay (Enbekshikazakh district). The commissioning of these facilities will completely solve the problem of triple-shift schooling in three schools and eliminate the shortage of places in two more institutions. In addition, after major repairs under the renovation program, 10 more renovated schools will open their doors.
In total, in the 2026-2027 academic year, about 385,000 children will study in 502 schools in the region, of which more than 35,000 are first-graders.
The region demonstrates high demographic growth. According to the akimat, over the past four years, 75 new schools and six extensions have been built in the region, which made it possible to reduce the number of triple-shift schools from 52 to 23 and solve the issue of transportation for 5,800 students.
In the period from 2026 to 2030, under the EPC+F mechanism, five more schools with 4,200 places will be built in the region in the most problematic points: in the villages of Otegen Batyr, Zhainak, Baiserke, A. Tokpanova, and Baiterek. This will remove the problem of triple-shift schooling for 7,204 children and reduce the need for transportation for another 2,871 schoolchildren.
