Three defendants in a criminal case involving the embezzlement of 101 million tenge earmarked for social housing have gone on trial in the Almaty Region, the website infohub.kz reports.

According to NUR.KZ, citing the regional prosecutor's office, the information was posted on the agency's official website.

The Raiymbek District prosecutor's office conducted a review of the legality of housing purchases for socially vulnerable citizens. The review covered government procurement in 2019–2024 for the purchase of 55 residential houses worth a total of more than 596 million tenge.

The audit uncovered a scheme to inflate housing prices, with the budget funds subsequently cashed out and distributed among those involved.

The pre-trial investigation established damage to the state amounting to 101.4 million tenge.

In a court verdict dated August 5, 2026, the three defendants were found guilty under Article 189 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (misappropriation or embezzlement of entrusted property). They were sentenced to prison terms of 7 to 8 years with a lifetime ban on holding relevant positions.

The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
