Almaty has completed the reinforcement of nine of the most dangerous landslide areas, while experts have identified seven additional risk zones, reports infohub.kz.
Work to reinforce nine slopes that posed a threat to residents and infrastructure has been fully completed. Landscaping is currently being finalized at these sites. According to the city administration, the measures began in October 2025 after a natural emergency. The engineering work has significantly reduced the risk of landslides.
In the Medeu District, the slope near the high-altitude Medeu skating rink, a section of the road to the Shymbulak ski resort, the road to the Kensai-2 cemetery, and the evacuation road to the Sarysay dam within the high-altitude Medeu sports complex were reinforced. In the Zhetysu District, work was completed on three sites: on Khojamyarov Street, along Palladin Street, and at the Kemel cemetery. Two more sites were reinforced in the Nauryzbai District: on Usikov Street in the Medeu residential complex and on the road at the entrance to the Akzhartau gardening partnership.
Inspection of potentially dangerous slopes continues. The working group includes specialists from the Department of Mobilization Preparation, Territorial and Civil Defense, the Almaty Emergency Situations Department, the state institution Kazselesashchita, the Institute of Geography and Water Security, and district administrations. As a result of the inspections, seven more sites with a high risk of landslides have been identified. Design solutions are being developed for them, after which reinforcement work is planned.
To prevent emergencies in mudflow, landslide, and avalanche-prone areas, information warning signs continue to be installed. Residents and tourists are notified of adverse weather via SMS alerts. During periods of increased danger, temporary restrictions are imposed on visiting certain mountain routes, including the Shymbulak area and the Big Almaty Lake.
