A dream of owning a home turned into ten years behind bars for a woman from Almaty. The 30-year-old is now serving her sentence in a women's prison in the Abai region, infohub.kz reports.
According to NUR.KZ, citing the regional Department of the Penal Enforcement System, more than 30 women are serving time for drug distribution in the women's prison in the Abai region. They range in age from 18 to 69. Many ended up behind bars after believing they could make quick money.
One of the inmates is a 30-year-old resident of Almaty. Several years ago, she and her 27-year-old boyfriend dreamed of a happy life together and a home of their own. The desire to save money quickly and secure a comfortable future ultimately led the couple to criminal charges.
Through social media, the man was offered a job producing drugs, and the woman was offered a job as a drug courier. The offer seemed like an easy way to earn good money.
At first, everything went as they had planned. Money came in regularly, they built up savings, and the couple began setting aside funds to buy a house.
But one more assignment turned out to be their last. Law enforcement officers detained the young couple. A court sentenced the woman to 10 years in prison and her boyfriend to 11 years.
Now, while serving her sentence, the convicted woman admits that the desire to make quick money completely changed her life. She now tries to use her time productively and works in the facility's dumpling workshop. From her wages, she pays the court-ordered damages.
"Four years ago, I imagined my future completely differently. My loved one and I dreamed of a family, a happy life and our own home. Back then it seemed to me that we had found an easy way to make money fast and bring our plans to life. But it all ended very differently. Now I understand what a high price I had to pay for wanting money quickly. I deeply regret what I did. Today I work in the dumpling workshop, trying to earn honestly and pay the money ordered by the court. I want to use the time I have to rethink my life and never make such mistakes again," the convicted woman said.
