In Almaty's Bostandyk district, streetlight poles are being replaced for the second time in a year — a local resident drew attention to the matter, the website infohub.kz reports.

The resident posted an appeal to the akimat on his Threads page. The user, posting under the handle artemitv, questioned how sensible it is to renew street lighting every couple of months. According to him, the black lamps installed at the start of the year did not last even two months, and now they are being taken down.

The publication drew a response from the Almaty department for the development of public spaces. Officials there explained the details of the removal of the outdoor lighting poles on Zharokova Street — on the stretch from Al-Farabi Avenue to Tole Bi Street.

The department noted that the project provides for the improvement of pedestrian areas, renewal of the pavement, expansion of greenery, modernization of the outdoor lighting system and installation of urban infrastructure elements. In addition, new modern outdoor lighting poles are to be installed, with increased wear resistance and improved lighting characteristics.

"The luminaires being installed provide higher-quality illumination of the area with a warm color temperature, which helps create a comfortable urban environment. The work to renew the outdoor lighting system is being carried out comprehensively along the entire length of Zharokova Street — from Al-Farabi Avenue to Tole Bi Street — rather than in separate sections. This approach is aimed at ensuring a single lighting standard and shaping a coherent architectural appearance for the street," the department's response says.

The department also stressed that the removed outdoor lighting poles are not scrapped but handed back to the Bostandyk district akimat's office for further reuse in other parts of the city.
