About 20 men in Almaty are registered as patients with breast cancer, representatives of the Almaty Oncology Center said at a briefing hosted by the regional communications service, according to infohub.kz.
Doctors at the center spoke about their youngest and oldest patients. As it turns out, breast cancer affects not only women.
"The youngest patient registered at the Almaty Oncology Center this year is 21 years old. I personally registered this patient. She is currently receiving comprehensive treatment at the oncology institute. The treatment is going well, and we are seeing results. And cancer is getting younger and younger every year," said Balziya Kalymbetova, an oncologist-mammologist at the Almaty Oncology Center.
Meanwhile, the oldest patient was a 93-year-old woman with breast cancer.
"In principle, breast cancer has no age restrictions. Men can also develop breast cancer. About 20 men are registered at the Almaty Oncology Center. Of course, it is less common in men, but nevertheless, men are also in the risk group, unfortunately," added Akbota Adilova, head of the consulting and diagnostic department at the Almaty Oncology Center.
According to the doctors, 659 cases of breast cancer have already been detected in the first eight months of this year.
"Of these, five women were at stage zero, 305 women at stage one, 312 patients at stage two, 20 women at stage three, and 17 patients at stage four. For the most part, cancer is detected at stage two," Kalymbetova noted.
