The legendary 'RoboCop' is returning to screens: Prime Video has ordered an eight-episode series based on the iconic franchise, according to the website infohub.kz.
The story centers on a massive tech corporation that persuades city officials to deploy a powerful robot in the police force. The robot's body is implanted with the consciousness of a deceased police officer, whom the public considers a hero.
Peter Ocko has been appointed as showrunner and writer. Director James Wan ('Saw,' 'The Conjuring,' 'Aquaman') will serve as executive producer. Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, co-writers of the original 1987 film, are also joining the project.
'Questions about technology, identity, and who corporations truly serve are even more relevant today than they were in 1987,' said James Wan. According to him, the creators want to preserve the spirit of the original 'RoboCop' while making the story contemporary and relevant for a new audience.
The 'RoboCop' franchise began in 1987 with Paul Verhoeven's film of the same name. It was followed by two sequels, a 2014 reboot, several TV series, animated shows, comic books, and video games.
The new series is part of Amazon MGM Studios' strategy to develop iconic franchises acquired through its purchase of MGM in 2022. Besides 'RoboCop,' the company is actively expanding the James Bond universe and working on new projects based on other well-known MGM films.
