Kazakhstan continues to implement its amnesty law. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, courts have already released more than 1,300 people, and hundreds more have had their sentences reduced, reports infohub.kz.
Since the law came into force, over 10,000 submissions have been sent to courts. Of these, nearly 4,400 were prepared by penal institutions, and more than 6,900 by probation services.
Courts have already reviewed over a thousand cases. As a result, 620 people have been released from correctional facilities, with administrative supervision established after their release. Another 724 people registered with probation services have been released from further serving their sentences.
"I want to emphasize that criminal amnesty is not applied automatically. Each case undergoes a legal assessment, and the final decision is made only by the court," said Niyaz Ryspaev, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Penal System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition to releases, more than 730 people have already had their sentences reduced.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that preparations for release are underway. Together with local executive bodies, they help individuals restore documents, find employment, and receive social and legal support. For those registered with probation services, accompaniment and control over the fulfillment of court-imposed duties are also provided.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that the cassation court, following a protest by the Prosecutor General's Office, overturned an unlawfully applied amnesty for a former accountant of a state institution in the Atyrau region. The woman, convicted of embezzling over 88.8 million tenge of budget funds, must serve the originally imposed seven-year prison sentence because she did not fully compensate the state for the damage.
