The army of Emir Timur was multinational: ancestors of modern Uzbeks, Tajiks, and Kazakhs fought in its ranks. This was stated by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Leonid Bobrov in a podcast by Kazakh historian Zhaksylyk Sabitov, reports infohub.kz.
According to the expert, the dominant role in Tamerlane's army was played by the Barlas tribe, from which the conqueror himself originated. Their key position was explained by kinship ties.
"Relations with the Jalairs were very contradictory. At first there were some misunderstandings, but they were still quite loyal to him. The Suldus were well represented. They always got the short end of the stick, though. At the same Kondurcha, it was the Suldus tumen that was broken through, but they fought to the end and also, in general, supported (Tamerlane - ed.). The Kipchaks too," Bobrov said.
In addition, the army of Emir Timur included many Golden Horde warriors, which made its composition multinational.
"Some peoples really dislike Timur's army. In fact, maybe this is not always fair, because who was in the army? Ancestors of modern Uzbeks, Tajiks, Iranians, Kazakhs. Kipchak units. That is, by and large, the army was international," the historian added.
