These guides, who for years accompanied tourists among glaciers, penguins, and orcas, could no longer tolerate the negative impact of mass tourism on the region's fragile ecosystem.
As participants in an anonymous survey revealed, it became unbearable to watch accelerating climate change and glacier melt against the backdrop of tourists' excited shouts. One former guide recalled experiencing record-breaking heat on the icy continent in 2020, when he walked around in a t-shirt and no gloves.
The gradual realization of their complicity in an industry harming wildlife led many to deep emotional burnout. Experts note that as Antarctic tourism expands, the challenge of balancing environmental education with preserving the region's pristine nature becomes ever more acute. For these guides, the only way to protect the place they loved was to leave it for good.
