President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) Claudio Tapia was detained by FBI agents at New York's airport before a flight to Argentina after the World Cup final, according to infohub.kz.
Tapia, AFA treasurer Pablo Tovighino, and businessman Javier Faroni had their computers and mobile phones seized. According to court documents, Tapia, Tovighino and Faroni must appear for testimony at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on July 30. The detention occurred amid an investigation into AFA's financial and commercial dealings. The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing the association's finances to determine whether transactions through the American banking system could be linked to financial crimes.
The investigation began after a complaint from Argentina's tax agency and may be related to contracts for friendly matches and television rights. On October 17, 2024, AFA announced Tapia's re-election as president until October 2028.
