Argentine prosecutors have requested prison sentences of 4 to 12 years for medical workers accused in the death of legendary footballer Diego Maradona. The Argentine TV channel TN reported this, according to infohub.kz.
Under the demands presented, 12 years in prison is sought for neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque. For Nancy Forlini, coordinator at the insurance company Swiss Medical, prosecutors are asking for 10 years, and for psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov — 8 years. Psychologist Carlos Díaz faces 5 years in prison, while nurses Ricardo Almirón and Mariano Perroni face 4 years each.
The parties have now moved to closing arguments in the trial over the death of the 1986 world champion. In the dock are the medics who monitored Maradona's health and treated him.
The prosecution argues that their actions were inadequate, insufficient, and negligent: the footballer was not provided with proper care and treatment, which could have led to his death.
Recall that Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 61. The cause of death was acute heart failure that caused pulmonary edema. He was the 1986 world champion and is considered one of the best footballers in history. According to a vote on the official FIFA website, Maradona was named the best footballer of the 20th century.
As BBC Russian Service previously reported, back in 2021, a commission of 20 experts studying the circumstances of Maradona's death deemed the actions of the medical team "inappropriate, inadequate, and irresponsible."
Note that a new trial in the Maradona death case began in Argentina in April of this year.
