Astana-1 railway station reconstruction enters final phase

The reconstruction of the Astana-1 station has entered its final phase. Once completed, its area will increase by 580 square meters to 8,400 square meters, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) said, according to infohub.kz.

The station currently serves about 10,000 people per day and 2.5 million passengers per year. After the reconstruction, the facility is expected to comfortably handle this passenger flow.

The roof installation, internal utility wiring, and the construction of the shore platform with a canopy have already been completed. Workers are now finishing interior work, building the concourse, and landscaping the area.

New escalators, elevators, and lifts have also been installed. The station will feature ramps, mother-and-child rooms, restrooms, and waiting areas.

A barrier-free environment is being created for passengers with reduced mobility. In particular, tactile navigation and information signs for people with visual impairments are being provided.

KTZ did not specify when the reconstruction is expected to be completed, but media reports have previously indicated late October 2026.

The Astana-1 station was built in 1990. Since then, mainly routine repairs have been carried out at the facility.

In September 2025, KTZ announced the start of a large-scale reconstruction of the building. Even then, the company mentioned repairs to the roof, facade, stairs, platforms, lighting, engineering systems, and restrooms.

KTZ noted that the work was to be carried out in stages so as not to disrupt passengers. The station's second building, constructed in 1961, continued to serve passengers, and its modernization is planned for the second phase.

The Astana-1 reconstruction is part of a program to modernize 124 railway stations on the instructions of President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev. Its goal is to create more modern, safe, accessible, and comfortable conditions for passengers.

KTZ is implementing the program with its own funds and with support from the Kazakh government, the Ministry of Transport, Samruk-Kazyna, and local akimats.
